We leave Cusco early by bus AND travel through Andean mountains, beautiful landscapes, folkloric rural communities such as Paucartambo and Ninamaraca (chullpas or burial tombs) belonging to the pre-Inca Lupacas culture. We then climb the last mountain to reach Acjanaco, the entrance to the Manu National Park, from where we descend into the lush cloud forest, which is home to a great variety of flora and fauna. Being an ideal place for epiphytes, orchids, bromeliads, etc..
Then walk into the cloud forest and appreciate the National bird of Peru. The colorful Cock of the Rock in his ritual mating dance, as well as toucans, trogons, quetzals, monkeys and hopefully the spectacled bear of South America (Tremantus ornatos), continuing our journey towards the valley of Kcosñipata to spend our first night.
We wake up early in the morning under the chorus of birds, to start our hike in the high Amazonian forest and visit agricultural plantations of coca, pineapple, cassava and other original products of the place.
Arriving at the port of Atalaya to embark on our motor boat and navigate 5 hours through the turbulent waters of the Alto Madre de Dios River, towards Boca Manu, having interesting breaks to visit native communities like Diamante (Yine or Piro group), continuing our expedition we arrive at the town of Boca Manu and lodge.
Early in the morning we start our expedition through the calm waters of the Manu River, to visit the Limonal Control post where we will register and enter the tourist zone of the Manu Reserved Zone. In the course of the trip we will carefully encounter white caimans and immense black caimans, hundreds of turtles and the world’s largest rodent, capybara; at the same time parrots, colorful macaws and hopefully the impressive jaguar; we arrive at the lodge. Immediately explore the lush terra firme forest or primary forest.
It is the most moving place for the sighting of wild flora and fauna of the Amazon. Then we head through the virgin forest towards the most famous lake of Manu, Lake Salvador or Salvador oxbow lake, to travel in a catamaran that will facilitate finding a variety of birds, monkeys, black caimans and hopefully the giant river otter (Pteronura Brasiliensis). This endangered species is seen most of the day swimming, fishing, eating and playing with each other.
After a great lunch typical of the area, we navigate for a short time down the Manu River and walk 4 hours to more, through the forest towards the second most important lake of Manu called Otorongo and we are located in the observation tower of 25 meters high to see the giant emerging trees of cedar, mahogany ceibas and the famous rubber trees or rubber. This being the home of many mammals that are occasionally encountered as capuchin monkeys, spider monkeys and wild pigs or peccaries; at night we can explore the forest using our good flashlights or lamps where we will find a variety of insects, toads, frogs, or spot the lake in search of some nocturnal creature as the colorful eyes of alligators, etc.. Overnight return.
This day we will slowly descend the currents of the impressive Manu River, to stop at Boca Manu and enjoy some cold or iced drinks to continue our journey against the current of the upper Madre de Dios River for 3 hours, giving us the best chance to see some migratory birds such as Osprey, hawks, jabiru, roseate spoonbill, etc.. At nightfall we will camp on a suitable beach on the Madre de Dios River.
Again in the morning after a delicious breakfast we return in our comfortable boat, trying to fish and enjoying the magnificent views of the Andes, such as the hot springs where we can enjoy lunch. Arrival to the port of Atalaya, where our bus will be waiting to drive us to Pilcopata. Overnight last night.
Very early in the bus back, again appreciate the famous cock of the rock in San Pedro, where we will have breakfast and continue our return to the ancient capital of the Incas; Cusco and arrival at 4:00 pm.
