We take you to know the ancient city of Caral, a spectacular archaeological center composed of huge pyramids that were built more than 4500 years ago. We invite you to explore this magnificent city, whose antiquity is only comparable to the first civilizations that originated in our planet, such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China and Mesoamerica. In our tour we will be able to appreciate a set of buildings in which stand out imposing truncated pyramids, a sunken circular plaza, a wonderful architectural complex that served as an amphitheater, spaces of massive public congregation and numerous houses built in the surroundings of the city.
Caral is located near the central Pacific coast of Peru. It is about 2.5 hours by vehicle from Lima, and as such, this tour is offered as a full day adventure. It starts at 7:00 am and ends at 7:00 pm.
The city site of Caral is the oldest city in the Americas. At its peak, Caral is believed to have had about 3,000 inhabitants. It extends over 150 acres and includes plazas, dwellings, temples, pyramids and an amphitheater. Caral was apparently a thriving metropolis. It could help archaeologists answer some questions about the origin of Andean civilizations.
The site was discovered in 1948 but excavations did not begin until the 1990s, Caral seems to lack pottery and artifacts that were found at other archaeological sites in the Andes. However, an excavation at one of the oldest pyramids led to the discovery of a 10-year-old boy, wrapped in a mat, who was charred 2900 BC. Archaeologists argue about the actual age of the site.
While touring Caral, you will enjoy seeing the main pyramid, which is almost as large as four soccer fields and rises to a height of 60 feet (18 m). You will also see the courtyard and amphitheater. The views of the surrounding valley are breathtaking.
